This one-day, key-industry event, will provide you with tools and ideas necessary to give you peace of mind that your project is ready for the weather conditions typical of arid regions-heat, summer storms and high channel and creek flows. Learn methods that will guarantee healthy vegetation establishment as well as bank protection during flooding and high flow conditions. 8:30– 9:00AM – Opening Keynote Session - Controlling Erosion in the Arid West-A Rude Awakening
- Using experiences as the WSDOT State-wide Erosion Control Coordinator in the mid-1990’s, Dave will confess to my complete ignorance, at the time, of the challenges of constructing in an arid climate. Western Washington? Easy- construct in the summer, cover bare soil before fall, 90% grass cover. Eastern Washington? Construct in the summer, huge, intense rainstorm, 30% grass cover is all you get then it snows. Wow! How do you do it?
- Presented by David Jenkins Dave Jenkins, CPESC recently retired after a 30-year career in heavy civil construction erosion control, including 3 years as the first WSDOT State-wide Erosion Control Coordinator, from 1996-1999. He will never forget the storm of July 3, 1998, that angled across Eastern Washington, wreaking havoc everywhere it went.

- We will look at multiple revegetation projects that have one thing in common: they all failed. We will look at why they failed, how we know what the cause is, and what was done to remediate the failure. Learn from our mistakes
- Presented by Adam Lyman Adam Lyman is the engineering manager for Syman, LLC with more than 20 years of professional experience in stormwater compliance, geotechnical, civil engineering, and dewatering. Experience includes primarily transportation, land development, and public works projects with an emphasis in stormwater and non-stormwater discharge compliance for construction and industrial sites. Mr. Lyman also is a certified construction site stormwater training instructor for the City of Boise and Idaho Transportation Department.

- 10:10 – 11:10AM – GCCM (Geosynthetic Cementitious Composite Mat) as a Valuable Solution to Erosion Control, Slope Protection, and More
- GCCM is a valuable and viable solution for many applications, including erosion control, slope stabilization, channel/canal lining, culvert repair, and more.
Quicker, less specialized installation, minimal prep work and no dedicated equipment help realize a greater return on investment over traditional cast-in-place concrete .
GCCMs also provides a much greener footprint, no concrete trucks mean less land disruption and emissions.
In our presentation we will define what GCCMs are, review installation methods and the types of applications suitable to GCCM use.
Case studies of recent projects completed here in the United States will be presented.

- 12:10 – 1:10PM – From Mud in the Streets to Dust in the Wind: Stabilization Strategies for Urban Construction Sites
- In the West, wet muddy winters and dry dusty summers wreak havoc on urban construction sites. Polluted stormwater runoff, unhealthy air quality for onsite crew and neighboring residents, and difficult and unsafe work conditions negatively impact the environment and the success of a project. If disturbed areas and loose dirt on construction sites are not proactively stabilized, it will be too late for effective corrective actions during the harsh conditions of winter or summer. Expensive street sweeping and labor to clean up track-out, fines and delays for non-compliance, and using water to suppress fugitive dust are much more costly than implementing basic stabilization strategies in advance. In this presentation we will review BMPs that will help limit, cover, and contain disturbed areas during all phases of construction. Whether it be a downtown high-rise, new commercial building or warehouse, a single family home, or subdivision site development, site stabilization is essential to the success of the project and limiting the potential negative environmental impacts during and after construction.
- Presented by Andy Long Andy Long has a BS in Environmental Science and Occupational Safety from Boise State University and a BS in Applied Mathematics from the University of Idaho. Andy is the Erosion Control Coordinator with the City of Boise.
- 1:15 – 2:15PM – Soil Health and Nutrient Status in Promoting Growth of Seeded Species for Outcompeting Invasive Plants on Dryland Sites
- Nutrient depleted soil or nitrogen-rich soil often promotes growth of invasive plants and not desirable seeded species which require full spectrum fertility. Disturbed sites may become dominated by invasives such as cheatgrass that persist for decades due to the failed establishment of late successional seeded species. Examples of novel methods of soil treatment emphasizing micronutrient fertility will be presented showing the benefits of nutrient-dense soil in promoting establishment of seeded species over weeds.

Stuart has an MS in Land Rehabilitation and 30+ years of experience in disturbed land reclamation. He is the founder of start-up company Edaphix committed to developing soil health-based methods of reducing or eliminating invasive plants at reclamation sites, on rangelands and in turfgrass.

2:30 – 3:20PM – The Road to Successful Project Stabilization and Revegetation
- Achieving success in the stabilization and revegetation of construction projects in the arid west calls for a systematic approach. We will break it down into five easy steps, discuss each step and share several case studies that illustrate the process.
- Presented by Damon Sump: Damon Sump is the National Sales Manager – West for Profile Products. He has spent the last thirty years in the erosion control and landscape industries. He is a long-time resident of Oregon and currently spends his time visiting projects and working with engineers, distributors, and contractors to provide innovative erosion control and revegetation solutions. He manages the Regional Business Managers in the western half of the USA and Canada. Damon holds his certification in CPESC (Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control). One of the favorite parts of his role is time in the field, consulting on projects and providing innovative reclamation and erosion control solutions.
