The Tie That Binds Us

In the world of soil and water conservation, innovation, and collaboration, one of the IECA’s most cherished traditions is a surprising—and stylish—one: The Tie That Binds Us.

This flamboyant piece of neckwear, passed from member to member since 1996, began as a playful gesture between colleagues. Neil Reinecker, the original owner, sparked the tradition by handing the tie to Toney Driver at the Seattle conference, only to see it become a symbol of camaraderie, humor, and respect. Each year, the tie is passed to a new recipient, typically someone who has made notable contributions to the association or industry, continuing its journey as a fun yet meaningful representation of the bonds we share.

Joanna Fetherolf - 2022 Recipient

Over the years, the tie has adorned the necks of dedicated IECA members, reminding us of the friendships, shared goals, and mutual respect that define our community. As Dan Waldman, an early recipient, said, “The Tie has become a nice metaphor for those things that connect our industry, association, and members together.”

This tradition is about more than passing along a piece of fabric—it’s about the spirit of collaboration and dedication to the industry of those who have shaped the IECA. Although it is lighthearted, it is a reminder of the serious collaborative work we do together.

Let’s keep The Tie That Binds Us alive, a beacon of connection at the heart of the IECA community.
