This course teaches practical, cost effective, and proven successful methodologies for establishment and persistence of vegetation for erosion control and restoration over a wide range of sites and conditions.

Learning Objectives:

1. To be able to distinguish between different types of plants, their establishment requirements, cover characteristics, and root stucture to determine site specific suitability.
2. To be able to evaluate essential soil characteristics and their particular ability to support or not support adequate vegetation to control erosion at a particular site.
3. To adequately understand soil biology in order to make educated decisions about soil management and use as a growth and erosion control medium.
4. To be able to determine when and when not to use soil amendments, inoculants, fertilizers.
5. How to ensure that design specifications are realistic given your particular environment, and how to avoid the most common pitfalls in construction that result in inadequate revegetation and erosion control.

Julie Etra, CPESC, Principal of Western Botanical Services, Inc., a consulting firm founded in 1992, has more than thirty years of experience in the fields of erosion control, revegetation, restoration, botanical surveys, environmental documents, monitoring, and wetlands. She has had extensive teaching experience, has produced more than 25 publications and has received numerous awards for design work. She has been an active member of IECA since 1988 She is bi-lingual (Spanish).
