Designing Post Construction BMPs...Cradle to Grave

This design workshop targets engineers and advanced level practitioners who develop both construction stormwater and post construction stormwater plans. The course will introduce key hydrologic and hydraulic principles for designing post construction stormwater BMPs. Modules will focus on key design elements for transitioning from the erosion and sediment control phase to the final post construction phase while managing stormwater quantity and preserving stormwater quality. Participants will design elements of: water quality grassed swales that were formerly diversions or conveyances during mass grading operations as well as dry detention basins that were used as skimmer sediment basins. Post construction BMP retrofit designs will be explored including a coastal dune infiltration system and other media filtration structural measures. Case studies will also be presented that demonstrate pollutant removal efficiencies of these BMPs based on analytical monitoring data. Lessons learned from each design example will be emphasized.

Ted M. Sherrod is a Principal Environmental Engineer with AECOM with key responsibilities involving management of construction stormwater and post construction stormwater programs, design of stormwater control measures and training materials, and development of stormwater management plans for private and public sector clients. Ted retired with 30 years of service with the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s (NCDOT) Roadside Environmental Unit and as a Transportation Engineering Manager for the Field Operations Section in Raleigh. Ted was tasked with implementing the Department’s Erosion and Sedimentation/Stormwater (E&SC/SW) program for linear and vertical construction. His roles involved design and field implementation of E&SC/SW and supervising 15 field engineers and technicians. Ted also oversaw the development of a NCDOT E&SC/SW training and certification program for now over 10,000 engineers, consultants, contractors, and transportation technicians involving inspection, site management, and design.
